Champion System Pro Cycling Team Rider Jaan Kirsipuu Wins Stage 4 of Tour of Korea!

Today brings fantastic news to the Team Champion System camp in the shape of a superb victory in today’s stage 4 of the Tour of Korea by Jaan Kirspuu.

The veteran Estonian sprinter had been somewhat handicapped by poor early season training opportunities during the heavily snow cursed winter in Northern Europe, but has gradually bitten his bar tape and suffered and ridden through the early season gaining form with every race.

Two days earlier the former Tour de France yellow jersey holder had come close to his first victory of the season by taking a 3rd place finish on a stage, but today he christened the team’s victory card by taking the first ever Team Champion System UCI ranked win, and given his rise to form we hope it won’t be long before he adds to the tally for the 2011 season.

Covering some 137-kilometers between Gungsan and Dangjin today’s parcours was relatively flat, and Jaan was able to take advantage of the controlling riding of the Tabriz Petrochemical Team and the conflicting lead-outs of the strong Korean teams, who have been fighting for home victories between their different teams. Unfortunately the team lost Australian rider Chris Williams in a scuffle with a guardrail.

Tomorrow’s stage follows a similar game plan, with rolling terrain for most of the way. In theory this should be a perfect stage for an experienced sprinter like Kirsipuu, as it comes just before a hilly stage and a rest day. You can be fairly sure that TPT will again be forced to control things, while the long climb the following day will be playing heavily on the mind of many riders, and could well open up opportunities for small break away groups, and force the Korean sprinters into chase down mode.

BMX Ace Steven Wong Jumps to the Road

In a surprise flip of disciplines Asian Games BMX Champion Steven Wong has switched start gate and signed up to ride for the Team Champion System Continental road racing team.

To some this will seen like something of a huge leap, but those who know the young Hong Kong based rider will also know that he has been training, and even occasionally racing on the road for some time now, and spent the early part of this year training with his new team-mates in Thailand.

Although the demands and duration of international stage racing are far more endurance based than those of BMX racing the switch is hardly un-known in bike racing; multiple Tour de France Points Champion Robbie McEwen is just one BMX’er who has made a huge mark on the road scene.

With contracts and licenses now in order Steven will make his debut with the team in next weeks Tour of Hellas (Tour of Greece), where he’ll be hoping to cut his teethe in the sprints, learning his craft from the inside.

We’ll catch up with Steven soon, but meantime stay tuned as the team have a busy schedule during May!

Champion System's Mart Ojavee Heads Home From Taiwan in Green

Although this year’s Tour of Taiwan started out on the wrong foot for Team Champion System (when they lost Australian team rider Deon Locke in a pre-race crash), things soon turned on their toes, thanks to a superbly consistent display of riding by the Hong Kong based team. This perseverance ultimately earned them the overall green jersey of the race’s point’s classification; a prize only narrowly overshadowed by the yellow jersey its self. This year’s race fielded a strong international line up of teams; including the Champion System sponsored Tabriz Petrochemical Team from Iran, whose start rider Mehdi Sohrabi had proven near unbeatable so far this year, and entering the race with 9 UCI ranked wins already this season was marked as the world’s most victorious rider of the current race season. Thus Sohrabi started as a clear favourite in this tour, the latest UCI Asia Tour race.

The race kicked of in Taipei with a 2 kilometre prologue time trail, which was won by young Australian Adam Phelan of the Drapac team, who ultimately went on to “double-end” the race by winning today’s closing road stage into Taipei.

Second on that opening pre-cursor was Champion System’s Mart Ojavee, who has also been of great form so far this year, and who was beaten by just a fraction of a second to the race’s first yellow jersey, hence narrowly missing out on the teams first UCI ranked victory of the year.

As the race hit the open road chilling winds and rains blew in, which made the racing tough and tactical; this well suits CS’s European riders, who are used to battling against the harsh conditions of their native northern Europe.

Playing their tactical cards well lead to Ojavee taking the green jersey of the race’s points leader, although with several mountain stages sandwiched into the middle of the ten-day race hopes of keeping the jersey until the end were slim, especially when the race for the GC became a battle between Sohrabi, his team-mate Markus Eibegger and Giant’s David McCann.

With “green points” scattered all along the race route, as well as on the finish line, CS worked hard to ensure Ojavee consolidated his lead at every opportunity, which he duly did, and even increased with a string of fine stage finishes too.

This was enough to make sure that he finished the race in green, just a few points ahead of team-mate and fellow Estonian Jaan Kirsipuu, who took several top six stage finishes on his way to 4th overall in the points competition. The racing in Taiwan went right down to the final wire, with the race’s overall lead changing hands on the ultimate 3-kilometre climb to the finish at Yangminshan, where Sohrabi lost contact with the leaders, re-opening the door for his Austrian team-mate Eibegger to fend off McCann to take the final GC in the race. The team were due to start the Tour of Thailand this week, but at the last minute things fell through, so the Tour of Korea will be the next Asia Tour race, which starts in just over 2 weeks.

Champion System Announces the Formation of Champion System UCI Continental Team!

Champion System, a leader in custom technical apparel, is proud to announce the debut of a new professional cycling team.  The team is registered as a UCI Continental Team in Hong Kong.

The 16 member team consists of riders from six different nations (Hong Kong, Estonia, Germany, Austria, Australia and Switzerland). The captain of the team is cycling veteran Jaan Kirsipuu, a former stage winner in the Tour de France as well as a former wearer of both the overall yellow leader jersey as well as the green sprint leader jersey. In 1998 and 1999 he was the number one ranked professional cyclist based on his total UCI victories. With a lightning fast sprint, even at the age 41, this seasoned pro will not only be counted on to win races but also as a mentor to the younger riders. In 2010 the Estonian sprinter was 3rd at the National Road Championships. In addition, Jaan appeared on the podium in prestigious stage races such as the Tour of China and the Tour of Thailand.

One of the primary goals of the team is to allow Asia’s top cyclists to compete in Europe at the highest level of the sport.  Until now opportunities for Asian racers to compete in Europe have been rare. Team Champion System will now pave the way.

The team will be competing on Champion System frames, a new division of Champion System.  Scott Kaylin, co-founder of Champion System, stated “We opted against any of the title sponsorship offers we received and instead decided to form a new company to produce Champion System frames. All the profits will go towards maintaining and growing our own pro team and hopefully additional Champion System teams. This puts us in a position of not worrying about finding sponsors every few years to keep the team going.

The team will make their racing debut at Tour de Langkawi, January 23-February 1.

Belgian cyclo-cross is the school of hard knocks where you are always racing the world’s best riders, generally on some of the most challenging courses you can imagine.

Champion System Announces Title Sponsorship of the MAC Cyclocross Series

With just one month remaining until officially kicking off the 2010/2011 international cyclocross season in Pennsylvania on September 11, the Mid-Atlantic Championship Cyclocross Series (better known as MAC) has announced a new title sponsorship with Champion System Sportswear, a leader in custom technical custom apparel. The 11-race series, which stretches from the tip of New York’s Long Island to the southern city of Baltimore 450 kilometers away, will now be known as the “Champion System MAC Series”.

“We’re excited to be the title sponsor of the MAC series” said Charlie Issendorf , VP of Sales at Champion System. “Supporting cyclocross teams and events is a big part of who we are at Champion System, and we wish the best of luck to all the racers competing in the series.”

As part of their agreement with the series, Champion Systems will be providing points leader jerseys in eight categories for at least the next two years. Champion will also provide series champion apparel not only for 2010 and 2011 series champions, but also for defending champs from the 2009 season.

Champion Systems joins Carrier Class and Revolution Wheelworks as new sponsors for the 2010 season. Revolution Wheelworks is name familiar to many ‘cross fans as one of the sponsors of Valentin Schertz, who will be defending his Champion System MAC title with the help of his new Philadelphia Cyclocross School team. Probably less familiar, though more ubiquitous within the lives of bike racers and their families, is the CarrierClass Group; a world class provider of wireless communication and green energy infrastructure. Also sponsoring the 2010 season are long-time MAC sponsors BikeReg.com and Hammer Nutrition.

The Champions Systems MAC Series kicks off with the first UCI-sanctioned ‘cross race in the world for the 2010-2011 international season with the Nittany Cross around the world-famous “T-town” Velodrome at Pennsylvania’s Valley Preferred Cycling Center. The eleven race series visits five states and includes nine UCI-sanctioned races. This year, Charm City and Granogue, traditionally the most highly attended races on the schedule, have both expanded to two-day formats. Last year’s Elite Champions, Switzerland’s Valentin Scherz and American Laura Van Gilder both intend to defend their Champion System MAC Championships, with Scherz bringing some additional firepower in the form of yet another Swiss rider, Anthony Grand.

Sadly, Paul passed away quietly at home early this morning.  His wife, Diana Walker, asks that people please giver her some privacy and refrain from calling at this difficult time.  Expressions in cards and letters would be OK. A memorial will take place at a later date and as things develop I  will keep  you posted. Champion System to Become Official Uniform Supplier to IHRA

Champion System, the New York-based full service custom apparel and accessory manufacturer, has entered into an agreement with the International Hot Rod Association to become the sanctioning body’s “Official Uniform Supplier.” The company has also acquired title sponsorship rights to IHRA’s seven-event 2009 Sportsman Nationals schedule.

“This is a perfect fit for us and an ideal situation for Champion System,” IHRA director of contingency and inside sales Kurt Oberholtzer said. “They have a product with outstanding quality that is very affordable, something our race teams will be able to take advantage of. Plus, they are an active company with aggressive leadership who wanted to branch out from their traditional role in cycling to brand their company in motor sports applications. We’re pleased they chose IHRA as their platform to do this.”

Champion System president Scott Kaylin thinks his company will blend in with IHRA immediately.

“IHRA wants to have a professional image as a company and we’re all about that,” Kaylin said. “This partnership is a very good fit.”

Kaylin has specific reasons he wanted to work with IHRA, citing Champion System’s background and the company’s roots.

“We started our business in cycling so we’re new to motor sports, but they are very similar in that both cycling and motor sports, especially drag racing, are sponsor-driven,” he said. “It’s a unique challenge to incorporate multiple sponsors into a uniform, but this is a challenge we have been meeting for a long time with our cycling background. Our transition into drag racing should be relatively seamless. This is a perfect fit for us.”

Champion System will provide IHRA officials with the uniforms they will be wearing at all 2009 Nitro Jam national events, Summit Racing Equipment Pro-Am events and all Champion System Sportsman Nationals presented by VP Racing Fuels events. The company will also be looking to build a client base consisting of IHRA competitors…particularly at the sportsman level.

“We wanted to get involved with IHRA because of their dedication and attention to the sportsman drag racer,” Kaylin said. “Because of our business model and experience we will be able to offer affordable garments and uniforms to the sportsman and professional teams. We want to make the sportsman racers look and feel like professionals when it comes to what they wear in competition.”

And we immediately received this response from one motorsports company:

Thank You Champion System for your recent decision to become Title Sponsor of IHRA's Sportsman Nationals.  In this day of scaled back services, you have awaken our Team's spirit by supporting Sportsman Drag Racing.

I read the IHRA web site posting and honestly, I had my doubts as to how much savings you all could give the Sportsman racer.  Well, after viewing your web site and prices, all I can say is "Wow, you got to be kidding me!"  Those prices are the best I've seen in years.  We spent more for the uniform shirts we have now and they are not that good looking.

You all will be hearing from us soon!
